Male to Female – What Goes in Must Come Out

I got back from holidays just before the new year and I am always reminded when I get back, just how much I loathe unpacking, but this time, it was a bit of a nightmare. You see, some drama ensued on the morning of our departure from Sydney. We discovered to our horror that collectively, we might have gone just a little overboard with our consumerist endeavours. As a result, not only did we have to purchase additional baggage allowance, but also, some major reshuffling of our packing was required – and that meant that something from everyone’s suitcase ended up

I Feel Good!

I feel like every year is a chapter in the book that is my life. In the final week of the year, I contemplate events of the past twelve months and then sum it up, like assigning a title to a chapter. I entitled 2023 ‘Slowing Down’. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not even close to retiring but I decided that in 2023, I’d make the extra effort, rather than work like crazy, to live in the moment, take it easy, explore new countries and spend as much time as possible with my family while also being more selective of the

Have Mic, Will Travel

It’s that time of the year again – kids are on holidays (not mine – they’re all grown), shopping centres are crawling with gift seekers, cash registers a-ringing and here in Singapore, the monsoon season is upon us. It’s almost like we have four seasons in a day. Okay, three since the lowest temperature recorded here in recent years was 22 degrees Celsius, hardly what anyone would call winter. Year-end travels are not the norm in my family because of my husband’s work commitments. This year is different though; we’re looking forward to a toasty Christmas down under where we will

Once Upon a Tape

I remember my first ever encounter with audio editing. This was well before Pro Tools, DAWs and computers ruled the post production floor. Slating VO takes these days is very much an option and usually only done upon request. Without it, no one’s head would roll and as an audio engineer, you wouldn’t risk being chewed up and spat out only to be tossed into the meat grinder by an irate producer. In comparison to yesteryear, you can now pretty much tell if there are multiple takes of a line or paragraph by simply looking at the waveform in your DAW.

Life in a Padded Room

I never ever thought I’d end up like this. My mind is consumed with all sorts of thoughts, wondering how I’ll act out or who I might be the next time they put me inside. A child perhaps? Or some sort of beast? How will I behave? Calm, frantic, furious, miserable… or like a raving lunatic? When the system crashes, no one can hear me, and the loud ringing in my ears is unbearably deafening. I feel so alone and isolated, with nary a soul to accompany me while the others outside discuss the things I’ve just said and how I’ve

So, You Think You Can Voice?

Just before a session one day, I had a bit of time to chat with the client and clarify certain parts of their script while waiting for others from the team to arrive. She then proceeded to demonstrate how she wanted some of the lines read. It was a good demonstration and I told her that. Sadly, she seemed to interpret it a bit differently, then going on to declare that she too, could be a voiceover artist. I didn’t quite know what to say but I had to be polite and just smiled. Please consider a few things before assuming
